On 19 September 2019, MENCK hosted its first Drivability Workshop in Kaltenkirchen, Germany.

Geotechnical engineers of all industries, both consultants and clients of MENCK, as well as pile designers and researchers, were invited to jointly discuss the challenges of drivability analyses and monopile-related projects.

In the past, the great variety of interpretation and prediction results on monopile drivability led to unnecessary expenditures of time and costs for multiple players. To reduce those efforts in the future, the workshop was established to share knowledge, understand each other’s analysis approaches, and learn from other’s experiences. Thus, forthcoming approaches can be aligned and tabled much earlier and before the actual project engineering task is undertaken. This means each party can act much more efficiently and will save time and costs in future projects.

The workshop started with practical work where each participant was asked to prepare a prediction and back-analysis of five projects, the required data was provided by MENCK. The analyzing methods and results were presented in the morning, followed by an extensive discussion round in the afternoon. This round covered topics such as the interpretation of soil data, calibration of site-specific soil resistance calculations and pile fatigue analyses. Further subjects were the energy losses due to the anvil, noise reduction units, the conical shape of a pile and the effects of pile driving shoes. Afterwards, MENCK presented its most recent developments in pile driving equipment and a guided tour through the MENCK workshop and outside premises completed the day.

It was a promising event, even beyond the participating companies. MENCK thus sees great potential in making this an annual or every two years event in the future, providing the opportunity for an intensive exchange of knowledge among all interested parties.
