Fino 3

The FINO3 research platform stands 80 km off Sylt, in the midst of the future German offshore wind farm. The experiences from its operation and the results of the numerous scientific research projects carried out on and at the platform help the wind farm operators and wind turbine manufacturers in the planning, building, and future operation of the offshore wind farm. In Schleswig-Holstein a “Competence Centre Offshore Wind Energy Use – North Sea Development Platform for Technology and Nature Conservation (FINO3-NEPTUN)" was set up at the end of 2005 which was funded by the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Economic Affairs with regional and European Union funds, European Regional Development Funds (ERDF), and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). The platform was constructed and set up in the North Sea during Phase I up to the end of June 2009. Phase II of the project - the operation and five research projects - was promoted by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety until the end of June 2012. In this period the Land of Schleswig-Holstein promoted two FINO3 research projects, which were concerned with measuring lightning strikes and wind turbulence. Phase III of the project - operation of the FINO3 research platform 2012-2017 - started with the delivery of the grant notification and covers the period 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2017. The grant from the BMUB comes from the special asset "Energy and Climate Fund". In the first three years, four new research projects were handled as subcontracts, which are concerned with acoustic field investigations, sea state recordings, bird migration research and meteorological measurements.
